Announcements 12/14/2020

Good afternoon staff and students!  Welcome to Ovid-Elsie Middle School Online where we are inspiring life-long learners to achieve their full potential and excel in a changing world.  Today is Monday December 14th, 2020.

THIS WEEK, your Student Council wants to spread holiday cheer & encourage you to focus on what you CAN do, instead of what you can't. You CAN dress Christmassy for your live classes, and you CAN have some fun in your Advisory Meets :) Here are our plans:

Week of December 14th in Advisory Meets:

Your Advisory teachers will have a few fun trivia games they can play with you when they choose to. Games created by your student council members!

Christmas Spirit Wear Days (can post pics to Padlet too):

Monday 14th: Flannel

Tuesday 15th: Ugly Christmas Sweater/Shirt

Wednesday 16th: Green/Red day

Thursday 17th: Christmas Hat 🎅& Socks Day

Friday 18th: Formal Friday (dress your best)👔👗🎩

Here’s a fun Christmas Science Fact for your Monday:

Question: How does Santa deliver all the presents in one night?

Answer: Very, very quickly!!  There are about 170 million homes to hit in one night, so Santa must visit 1,475 per second to stay on track, leaving roughly 0.0007 seconds to get in, leave presents, eat cookies, drink milk and get out.  Wow!!

And the coolest craft of the Christmas season….make your own cardboard Rudolph head to hang on the wall (maybe out of one of the many Amazon boxes which have probably shown up at your house!).

Let’s make gorgeous, big, paper snowflakes to hang from the ceiling: https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-Snowflake

These snowflakes need paper, tape, scissors and a stapler.

And for an easy snowflake Christmas card, requiring only paper or card and colored pens or markers try:

Continuing the snowflake vibe, let’s look at a snowflake science fact:

Question:  Where and how are snowflakes formed?

Answer:  Snowflakes are formed IN clouds.  Many people believe that snowflakes are formed when a raindrop freezes as it falls from the sky. This isn’t entirely false. Snowflakes ARE formed when rain droplets freeze, but that happens INSIDE the cloud. Water vapor from the cloud assembles on these ice particles, causing it to stretch into a hexagonal prism and then shoot branches to create a more complex shape. The temperature and dampness of the cloud affect a snowflake’s shape, so they are constantly changing.  Isn’t that cool?!!  Literally! :)

Here’s a nice wee snowman craft for you to do using an old white sock, rice, rubber bands, colorful buttons, ribbon, a glue gun, markers, or paint and small, orange pom poms, felt or playdoh.  https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/no-sew-sock-snowman-craft/

We had a wee smattering of snow last night so let’s learn some snow facts:

Question: What color is snow?

Answer: Snow is colorless but appears to be white due to the little sunlight that the snow absorbs.

Question:  How fast does snow fall?

Answer: The average snowflake has a top speed of 1.7 metres per second, or 3.8 miles per hour - they’re not breaking any speeding laws!!

Question: How big was the world’s largest snowman ?

Answer:  The world’s largest snowman was built in a village in Maine in 2008.  It was 122 ft tall and weighed 13,000,000lb.  It’s eyes were made from 5ft wreaths!
