Answer: President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Note: President Dwight D. Eisenhower is credited with launching the U.S. space program. He responded to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik by establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  When President John F. Kennedy took office, he significantly expanded NASA and set the ambitious goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
