The Student Council at OEMS have been working on some fun End of Year Events which will benefit a couple of different charities. We will be having a Walk-A-Thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society on Friday, May 28th, with a donation of $3 to participate. Thursday, May 27th and Friday, May 28th students will be able to purchase cotton candy for $2 and cosmic brownies for $1 during lunch, to support 'Prevent Child Abuse America'. To round out the fun our 'Mystery Marauder' is going walkabout again! For all our remaining school days he'll be hiding around the school. Classes can compete to find him first and win ice-cream on the last day of school. Thanks to our OEMS Student Council and Mrs Willbanks for providing us with these fun opportunities!

The CDC has recently made important announcements regarding the wearing of masks.  Within those recent recommendations they specifically mention schools. The CDC recommends schools continue to use the current COVID-19 prevention strategies for the 2020-2021 school year which includes mask use for all students and staff.  The Mid-Michigan District Health Department supports this recommendation. Furthermore, the MIOSHA order that governs safety procedures for all employers is still in place and continues to mandate mask wearing in the workplace. Ovid-Elsie staff and students will continue to wear masks and implement current prevention  practices both indoors and on busses for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

The Middle School Student Council has been active this month running a mask decorating contest and a creative writing contest and the results of both were drawn last week. For the mask art contest a template was provided to every member of the school (online and face to face) for them to decorate: 4th place went to Elizabeth F, 3rd place went to Laiken W, 2nd place went to Riley C, & 1st place went to Victoria D. Congrats! Victoria will be having a REAL MASK custom made from her design! For the creative writing contest contestants were asked to write about the pandemic in one of a variety of suggested ways: 4th place went to Brianna B, 3rd place went to Clarissa B, 2nd place went to Icnacio O, and 1st place went to Alison K. Alison received a $15 Visa Gift Card. Congratulations to the winners but a shout-out to every single person who submitted an entrance in either contest. The entries were absolutely overflowing with creativity! Special thanks to Denise Willbanks who spends countless hours providing our students with fun opportunities and encouraging our Student Council.

It is looking like it's possible we may not have fans in our gym stands this winter, but you can certainly still be there on a cutout, showing each of our student-athletes support. Please consider donating to the program and sharing via email, text, and social media to any and all friends or family members so we may reach our goal to pack the gym with our "virtual fans" for all of our basketball games! Dear Marauder High School Families: We are providing this letter as a preventative measure because our area continues to have a rise in Covid cases. In the event we have to go to a 100% virtual format - we will be adjusting our schedule to meet the many needs identified by parents and students to help with successful at home learning. We are not making any changes as of right now, but in this rapidly changing environment, we often have little time to communicate if an outbreak occurs and we need to stop offering face to face instruction as an option. Again, we are not making changes right now and this document identifies our high school's plan if we go to 100% virtual. Thank you for your understanding and support as we all try to help your child navigate the many challenges we are all facing. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ONTELzujuWpERx_5NLvIVCul6aq9dMPM7RdsTI3NL6E/edit?ts=5fa4097d

A reminder that the week of November 23rd, 2020 will be a remote learning week. Staff and students will be required to engage remotely on Monday, Tuesday, and half a day on Wednesday prior to the Thanksgiving break. We realize that not everybody has access to reliable internet from their homes. We would like to offer the use of our school internet to enable all students to pursue their virtual education. At Leonard and E. E. Knight Elementary, students will be able to bring their own Chromebooks or Chrometabs and use our wifi in the Library on Monday and Tuesday, between the hours of 10am-2pm. Lunch will be provided, if requested, from 11:45am-12:15pm. Please contact the front office by Friday, November 20th if you wish to participate in this opportunity.

We upgraded our firewall (IBoss) last night to a more robust cloud-based solution. It takes up to 24 hours for updated settings to roll out to all devices, but rebooting your device will speed the process. Virtual learning this Wednesday will be the real test of this solution. E. E. Knight will be doing a school-wide rock garden/path project paid for by a grant written and received by Mrs. Travis. The purpose of the project is to have students leave a "footprint" at the school. The positive message in the book Only One You by Linda Kranz is "There is only one you in this great big world...make it a better place." All students will read the book and take part in a discussion of the messages and wisdom shared. Each student will then paint their own "fish" rock and put their name underneath. All of the completed rocks will be put together in a path in front of EEK and each year the path will grow. Please search for the perfect rock with your child and bring to school the first week of school.

Parents and Graduates, As we move forward with this unusual graduation ceremony, there have been many questions about what protocols will be in place.   The following is our plan. Students, for graduation practice, we will meet on the football field at 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1.  You are required to wear a mask until we have you placed on the field six feet apart.  Of course, you may leave your mask on if you feel safer that way.  The same protocol will be followed in the evening as we prepare for the ceremony.    Also, please bring your own pen.   On a three by five card you will be writing down how you want your name read at graduation. In the stadium, chairs will be spaced 6 feet apart for students and graduation guests on the field.  There will be no hand shakes or hugs during the ceremony.   Students will flip their own tassel and pick up their diploma after it is placed on a table. Student's Four (4) Parents / Guests- The bleachers will be marked with tape to designate where each graduate's four guests must sit.  There will be six feet of distance between each group.  We had hoped to have more people, but current circumstances simply do not allow it.  Please be conscious of other people and their safety as we move forward.   Here is the link for the live stream of graduation:  nfhsnetwork.com.The ceremony will also be recorded and and released when it is ready.

Graduation and Prom Update: Students, Parents, and Community Members, We had originally rescheduled prom for August 7, 2020. However, our venue, The Michigan Princess (Riverboat) has cancelled their events for the remainder of the year. At this time, the school will not be hosting a prom, our sincerest apologies for this. Mr. Topping and Mrs. McCormick can be emailed and they will refund your tickets if you had already purchased them. Graduation has been confirmed for July 1, 2020 at 7:00 PM. Rain date is July 2, as we do not have an inside venue due to the bond work being done in the schools. Due to government restrictions, attendance will be limited to 4-people per graduate. Students will get their tickets at graduation practice. Students were sent an email with Senior Tea and graduation day expectations. Practice is MANDATORY at 11:00 am. You will not need caps and gowns at practice. We apologize graduation will not be open to the public, but we will be live streaming the event at the following link: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/events/ovidelsie-high-school-elsie-mi/evtb56bc7a1d6 We appreciate your understanding as we continue to try and navigate this challenging situation and comply with the governor's executive orders.

The Memory Project shared 11 photos of children living in deep poverty in the Philippines with Mrs. Weber's high school art students. As gifts, the students created artistic portraits of the children. These heartfelt portraits provided a unique message of caring and served as a meaningful pieces of personal history for the children. A video can be found here. https://vimeo.com/322812230/df5738bc9d
