I am writing you today to give you my assurance that your children and their safety are at the forefront of our minds after the tragedy in Connecticut on Friday. I have two children in the District, at two different schools, and I can tell you that a great deal of thought goes into doing everything possible to keep our children safe. As a parent, Friday’s tragedy in Connecticut makes us feel powerless, angry and desperate in the face of those outside threats.
Prior to this incident, the Ovid-Elsie Administration began reviewing its’ safety and lockdown procedures. Each school building has developed teams to review all of their procedures and adjust accordingly. Our school safety teams work closely with representatives from Clinton County, Ovid and Elsie, and the Lansing Police Department.
My intent with this letter is to reassure you that your children’s school does everything possible to keep your children safe. With all of the media attention that these situations draw we must be very careful in school not to frighten our children any more than they already are. As always, counseling is available for those children who are having difficulty with this situation.
I have great faith in our staff here at Ovid-Elsie Area Schools and I am confident that we will be able to continue to positively support your children.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your children’s teachers, your building principal, or me.
Dr. Ryan L. Cunningham, Superintendent
