We are moving forward with a grassroots initiative intended to positively impact the future of public education. The most powerful voice for public education is the voice of our parents. Parents need to know the facts about the current state of educational policy and they need to know how to get involved so their voice can be heard. The goal is to make an impact on both funding and legislation with the interest of all Michigan students, including those in Ovid-Elsie, in mind. We are at a pivotal point in education right now on many fronts. We have the EEA Bill, the Oxford Plan for funding, the gas/road tax, the school loan bond fund, and many more pieces of legislation on the horizon that will impact our schools, our students, and our community. Despite misleading headlines that our funding would be increased by 2% with the governor’s budget proposal, we will actually have less funding than we have this year if his proposal passes.
DeWitt Public Schools has offered to host an organizational meeting at DeWitt High School on March 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. We are moving quickly because we do not want to wait for Spring Break and miss an opportunity to have an impact on the these important issues. The idea of this event is to help organize and motivate parents to get involved. The call is going out to parents in Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, and Shiawassee to get their parents involved in these efforts. This movement is going strong in West Michigan and it is growing in Southeast Michigan. We would like each district to bring at least five people who would like to become the voice of Mid-Michigan. We want board members, staff, and especially parents to join us. The speakers and facilitators for the night are two parents from Kent County who are dynamic and motivational speakers. They are well informed and they are passionate about public education. They have a lot great advice on how parents can get involved.
If you plan on attending, please contact Randy Barton at 989-834-2271 ext. 2304 or via Email at email@example.com. I hope that you can attend this meeting at DHS on March 21, 2013 @ 7:00 PM. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors.
