Mr. Wertz was recently awarded a 2018 K-12 Geoscience Education Grant award sponsored by the American Institute of Professional Geologists - Michigan Section. The $500.00 grant will be used to purchase another digital lab data collection device to use with the 7th grade science unit about the uneven heating of the earth as well as other units throughout the year.
UPDATE!! OEMS 7th and 8th Grade Boys Basketball. Practice starts Monday, January 7. 7th grade will practice 4:30-6:30 and 8th grade will practice 6:30-8:00. There will be a parent meeting for the 7th grade players following the conclusion of practice. Just a friendly reminder that you must have a physical on file with the office in order to practice.

Our middle school robotics team, JC Strongbots #11705, recently competed in their qualifier tournament last Saturday at Kettering University. The competition included 36 teams from all over Michigan. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for the state tournament. Overall, the students learned a great deal about being part of a high functioning team and had an amazing time!
Tonight’s games against Lakeville are still scheduled to be played.
We have been closely monitoring backroad conditions and at this point we do not feel comfortable sending drivers out. Thus, OE will be closed today. We apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks, have a great weekend and if our driving - please be safe!

Witt Breaks All-Time Assist Record as OE wins 61-10 Senior Erin Witt will hoist her name on to the record board for the second time as her five assists broke the all-time record previously held by Kayla Galecka. Last year Witt broke the single-season record. "I'm so happy for Erin and so proud of her effort. She has put in so much work to get her to this point and her teammates were genuinely happy for her," Head Coach Ryan Cunningham said. "This was a nice team win where a lot of kids contributed tonight." Caitlyn Walter and Kylee Sevenski led the Lady Marauders (2-1, 1-0) with 12 points each while Lauren Barton added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Witt also had 8 points and 9 rebounds to go along with her 5 assists. Kennedy Haynes, Josie Nash and Kierah Darling each added 4 points, Micayla Coleman 3 points, Madison Cunningham 2 points and Kylie Visger 1 to round out the scoring for OE. The Lady Marauders will host league foe and powerhouse Byron on Tuesday night.
Ovid-Elsie Youth Wrestling is open to all boy and girls who are between the ages of 5 and 14 as of December 31, 2018. Sign-ups begin Wednesday, December 12th at 5:30 pm in the concession lobby outside of the High School's Main Gym. Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning January 8th, at the High School from 6-8 pm. Cost is $40 per wrestler. OEMS students and staff enjoyed an afternoon of African music and dancing. Kevin Collins is a respected percussionist who shares his love of African music through lively, participatory performances. In addition to his professional work performing with big bands, he directs an ongoing African Drum and Dance Troupe in Flint.

Team JC Strongbots is now entering our 3rd year of competition in the world-wide First Tech Challenge program. The team is made up of several smaller work groups including the following: builders, programmers, communication, scout, safety, web, design, social media, digital media, and t-shirt/graphic design teams. They are all working hard getting ready for our upcoming tournament qualifier at Kettering University on December 8, 2018.

On Friday, we are hosting a huge ceremony to rename parts Colony Road and Hollister Road after two soldiers (OE grads) that died serving their county. The ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Auditorium and we are expecting a large crowd including family and friends and possibly State representatives. All are welcome to attend.

OEMS 6th grade students celebrated World Friendship Day by learning about different cultures. We had presenters from Nigeria, Cuba, China, and Argentina. The presenters are here in the Lansing area continuing their education at Michigan State University. They volunteered their time to come teach our 6th graders about their cultures. Students have asked about wearing costumes for Halloween. Students will be allowed to wear a costume, but it must follow the school dress code in the handbook. Hats can be worn, as long as it is not covering the face, but no masks, no blood, and no weapons. If any part of your costume is in violation of the dress code, you will be asked to change. No exceptions.

OEMS Girls Basketball, The 7th grade girls remain undefeated with a dominating performance last night defeating Mt. Morris 50-3. The 8th grade girls won another game last night over Mt. Morris by the score of 43-16. It was another overall good team performance by the girls. This puts their record at 4-1 on the season. They travel to Durand on Wednesday

Your 7th grade Lady Marauders made it four in a row with a 50-7 win over Byron Wednesday night. Braeden Tokar had 11 points, Evalyn Cole and Hailee "Soupie" Campbell each had 8 points, and Ava Bates 5. Kayleigh Pfeiffer, Kaitlyn Fry and Jollee Swender each added four points while Baylee Myers, Haylee Palus and Kylie Davis each chipped in with 2. Tokar added 6 rebounds and Cole grabbed 7 steals. Sonja Ramos also had 5 steals and Samantha Snider 2 steals to help lead the way defensively for OE. The Lady Marauders will next host Mt. Morris on Monday at 5:00 p.m. so come out and support your Middle School basketball girls!
In Tuesday night’s OEMS cross country action the boys team finished second in the league thanks to great efforts from Ryan Gavenda, Gage Kvalevog, Gunner McCreery, Chase Kline, and our top boys finisher Clay Powell who completed the 3200 meter racecourse with a time of 13:18. Leading the way for the girls team was Abigail Prewitt with a time of 15:26.

Both 7th and 8th Grade Girls Basketball Teams brought home a W last Night. The 7th grade Lady Marauders improved to 3-0 last night with a 59-10 win over Montrose. Evalyn Cole led the way with 12 points, Ava Bates and Braeden Tokar each had ten points, and Kaitlyn Fry with 8 points. Hailee Campbell, Haylee Palus, and Sonja Ramos each had four points. Fry-dog also led the way with 5 steals while Kylie Davis and Jollee Swender led in rebounding with 4 each. The 8th grade girls got another victory last night over Montrose by the score of 39-12. It was another solid team effort by the girls and this brings their record to 3-0 this season OEMS Girls will travel to Byron on Wednesday

On behalf of the Vincent family, Ovid-Elsie Area Schools is saddened to announce the passing of 2018 graduate Carson Vincent. At this time we do not have details about his passing and we simply ask that you respect the privacy of the family as they are working through this tragedy. Grief counselors are on site today and throughout the week for staff, students and anyone else who may need assistance through this traumatic event. Visitation and funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. Our thoughts are prayers are with the Vincent family.

OEMS Events Week of 9/10/18 Parents, I hope you all had a relaxing weekend. Here is what we have going on this week at the Middle School. Wednesday: Student challenge is at 7:15 am in the student workroom between Mrs. Delo’s and Mrs. Huhn’s room. Student Council forms are due to Mrs. Kirby, Mrs. Frechen, or Miss Chaffee by 3pm. Thursday: There will be an information meeting in Mr. Wertz’s room from 3:10-4pm for any 7th or 8th grade student interested in Robotics.
In an effort to make sure every student has O-E Blue and Gold for our "Blue and Gold" Fridays, Ovid-Elsie clothing is being collected to pass out to students who do not have O-E clothing. Please dig through your closets and look for clothing that is gently used and does not have names that you are willing to donate to the cause. Please drop off to Dana Blank at 2130 N. Hollister Rd. (there will be a bin there) or drop off at Ovid-Elsie High School in care of Ms. Blank. She will help distribute these items so ALL kids come to school dressed in Blue and Gold EVERY Friday! Go Marauders!

If you forgot about the deadline, you have one last chance to get your order in. Final orders are due NO LATER than Wednesday, September 5th at 3:00pm.
